Trump, Clinton to trade jokes instead of barbs at Al Smith dinner
By David Gibson | 24 hours ago
NEW YORK (RNS) This has been an unconventional election by almost any measure, with both candidates garnering record high negatives from the voters and political newcomer Donald Trump — a real estate and casino mogul — lowering the bar on almost every previous standard of acceptable campaign rhetoric.

But the Catholic Church likes nothing better than to stick with tradition, and so Trump, the Republican nominee, and his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, will be headlining the glitzy Al Smith Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan next month to trade jokes (hopefully) rather than barbs in a custom that goes back more than 70 years.

“The presidential nominees will share the dais with Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, and they will deliver the evening’s speeches in the spirit of collegiality and good-humor that has become a hallmark of the gala,” said a statement issued Tuesday (Sept. 27) by the New York Archdiocese and the foundation that runs the event.

The Oct. 20 dinner “honors a cause that transcends the polarizing political rhetoric of the day and exemplifies the vision of Gov. Alfred E. Smith, known as ‘The Happy Warrior’ for his ability to maintain his positive outlook even as he tackled the pressing social issues of his day,” the statement said.

The dinner’s namesake was the New York governor who in 1928 became the first Catholic nominee for president. Smith was known as a reformer and “man for the people,” but anti-Catholicism was still so virulent at the time and the pre-Depression economy of the 1920s roaring so fiercely that the Democrat was trounced by Republican Herbert Hoover.

A charitable foundation that takes his name was launched in 1946, two years after Smith’s death, and over the years its annual dinner has become “a ritual of American politics,” as historian Theodore H. White put it, where candidates of opposing parties would come together for a few hours of comic relief at the height of an intense campaign battle.

But the white-tie dinner itself has not been free of controversy, especially for its host. Dolan, for example, was excoriated by conservative Catholics in 2012 when he continued the tradition by inviting President Obama, whose stance in support of abortion rights and other issues outraged some.

READ: Cardinal Timothy Dolan defends Obama invitation to Al Smith Dinner

There was some precedent for Dolan to punt on an invitation to Obama: In 1996, then-Cardinal John O’Connor did not invite either of that year’s candidates because he did not want to give President Bill Clinton, an abortion rights supporter who was running for re-election, a church-sponsored platform that tends to show the candidates in a flattering light.

And in 2004, then-Cardinal Edward Egan did not invite either candidate, President George W. Bush or his challenger Democratic nominee, John Kerry, a Catholic who supports abortion rights.

But Dolan is an outgoing personality who tends to prefer engagement to picking fights, and he also enjoys an evening that can showcase his own deft talent for quips.

Four years ago, Dolan defended himself from the critics, saying the dinner is a time for civility, engagement and dialogue — and raises money for needy children.

“Those who started the dinner 67 years ago believed that you can accomplish a lot more by inviting folks of different political loyalties to an uplifting evening, rather than in closing the door to them,” Dolan wrote at the time.

He added that he believed he was also following the example of Jesus, “who was blistered by his critics for dining with those some considered sinners; and by the recognition that, if I only sat down with people who agreed with me, and I with them, or with those who were saints, I’d be taking all my meals alone.”

Whether Dolan will be criticized again this year, or in the same way, remains to be seen. The real interest may be on how the candidates comport themselves.

Trump has upended conventional Republican politics, especially its family values agenda: He is a thrice-married businessman with a legacy as a playboy and someone who has supported abortion rights and gay rights. He has made headlines by insulting ethnic and religious minorities, women and the handicapped, among others.

While Trump has said he will oppose abortion as president, many remain dubious, and some of his other statements have upset Catholic leaders.

Trump has also shown himself to be relatively thin-skinned when it comes to criticism or teasing, which is unusual for a candidate for such a high office, where calumny and comedy are daily fare.

And if Clinton is not quite the tummler that other candidates have been, she has shown an ability to tweak Trump, as she did in the first of three presidential debates on Monday night.

The Matthew Bible

The Overlooked Link Between Wycliffe-Tyndale and the King James Bible,
overshadowed by attention on the latter

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Bible

The Matthew Bible, also known as Matthew's Version, was first published in 1537 by John Rogers, under the pseudonym "Thomas Matthew". It combined the New Testament of William Tyndale, and as much of the Old Testament as he had been able to translate before being captured and put to death. The translations of Myles Coverdale from German and Latin sources completed the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, except the Apocryphal Prayer of Manasses. It is thus a vital link in the main sequence of English Bible translations.

Translation

Matthew's Bible was the combined work of three individuals, working from numerous sources in at least five different languages.

The entire New Testament (first published in 1526, later revised, 1534 and 1535), the Pentateuch, Jonah and in David Daniell's view,[1] the Books of Joshua, Judges, Ruth, First and Second Samuel, First and Second Kings, and First and Second Chronicles, were the work of William Tyndale. Tyndale worked directly from the Hebrew and Greek, occasionally consulting the Vulgate and Erasmus’s Latin version, and he used Luther's Bible for the prefaces, marginal notes and the biblical text.[2][3][4][5] The use of the pseudonym "Thomas Matthew" resulted possibly from the need to conceal from Henry VIII the participation of Tyndale in the translation.

The remaining books of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha were the work of Myles Coverdale. Coverdale translated primarily from German and Latin sources.[6] Historians often tend to treat Coverdale and Tyndale like competitors in a race to complete the monumental and arduous task of translating the biblical text. One is often credited to the exclusion of the other. In reality they knew each other and occasionally worked together. Foxe states that they were in Hamburg translating the Pentateuch together as early as 1529.[7]

The Prayer of Manasses was the work of John Rogers. Rogers translated from a French Bible printed two years earlier (in 1535). Rogers compiled the completed work and added the preface, some marginal notes, a calendar and an almanac.

Of the three translators, two were burned at the stake. Tyndale was burned on 6 October 1536 in Vilvoorde, Belgium.[8] John Rogers was "tested by fire" on 4 February 1555 at Smithfield, England; the first to meet this fate under Mary I of England. Myles Coverdale was employed by Cromwell to work on the Great Bible of 1539, the first officially authorized English translation of the Bible.

Time and extensive scholastic scrutiny have judged Tyndale the most gifted of the three translators. Dr Westcott (in his History of the English Bible) states that "The history of our English Bible begins with the work of Tyndale and not with that of Wycliffe." The quality of his translations has also stood the test of time, coming relatively intact even into modern versions of the Bible. A. S. Herbert, Bible cataloguer, says of the Matthew Bible, "this version, which welds together the best work of Tyndale and Coverdale, is generally considered to be the real primary version of our English Bible",[9] upon which later editions were based, including the Geneva Bible and King James Version.[9] Professor David Daniell recounts that, "New Testament scholars Jon Nielson[10] and Royal Skousen observed that previous estimates of Tyndale's contribution to the KJV 'have run from a high of up to 90% (Westcott) to a low of 18% (Butterworth)'. By a statistically accurate and appropriate method of sampling, based on eighteen portions of the Bible, they concluded that for the New Testament Tyndale's contribution is about 83% of the text, and in the Old Testament 76%.[11] Thus the Matthew Bible, though largely unrecognized, significantly shaped and influenced English Bible versions in the centuries that followed its first appearance.

Printing

John Strype wrote in 1694 that the 1537 Matthew Bible was printed by Richard Grafton, in Hamburg.[12] Later editions were printed in London; the last of four appeared in 1551.[13] Two editions of the Matthew Bible were published in 1549. One was a reprint of the 1537 first edition, and was printed by Thomas Raynalde and William Hyll (Herbert #75). The other was printed by John Daye and William Seres,[14] and made extensive changes to the notes of the original Matthew Bible, included copious commentaries on the book of Revelation based on the book Image of Two Churches by contemporary John Bale.
Van Meteren's son, Emanuel, stated in an affidavit dated 28 May 1609 that his father was "a furtherer of reformed religion, and he that caused the first Bible at his costes to be Englisshed by Mr Myles Coverdal in Andwarp, the w’h his father, with Mr Edward Whytchurch, printed both in Paris and London." Coverdale was employed as a translator by Jacobus van Meteren. Rogers began assisting the work around 1535, and married J. van Meteren's niece Adriana in the same year that the Matthew Bible was first published (1537). Rogers was living in London again at the time of the second printing of the Matthew Bible in 1549.

Further along, starting at 10:38- 10:49, this video mentions the Jesuit infiltration of religious institutions as the Church of England in order to spread false ideas, an example of which that I spotlighted here to lay the groundwork for Rome's Pharmacratic Inquisition.  (see more)

Hillary Clinton Seeks To Place Jesuit A Heartbeat From Becoming U.S. President

selects former Governor of Virginia Tim Kaine as running mate
if elected would be the 2nd Roman Catholic U.S. Vice President,
after predictably pro Rome Joseph Biden
and the first openly Jesuit affiliated

1976 graduate of Rockhurst High School, a Jesuit school located in Kansas City.
1980-1981 worked with Jesuit missionaries in Honduras

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockhurst_High_School

In 1908, Rev. Michael P. Dowling, S.J., selected a site for a Jesuit school at 52nd and Troost St. in Kansas City. The name "Rockhurst" was chosen because large rocks found on the school new grounds resembled those at Stonyhurst, a Jesuit-owned plot of land in Lancashire, England. Rockhurst was established by the Society of Jesus and chartered by the State of Missouri as part of Rockhurst College in August 1910. Classes began in the fall of 1914 In 1917, Luke J. Bryne Jr became the first graduate of the school. It changed its name to "Rockhurst High School" in 1923. The high school shared a campus and corporate umbrella with the college until 1962, when it moved to the Greenlease Campus—named for its principal benefactor, Robert C. Greenlease.[2]
According to a July 23, 2016 Time magazine article authored by Christoper J. Hale:
    http://time.com/4420430/tim-kaine-catholic-abortion/

“That high school experience with the Jesuits was a key part of my transition into an adult life where instead of just accepting the answers of my parents or others, I’ve been a person who wants to go out and find the answers on my own, and the Jesuits get credit for that,” ...

    According to his wiki bio:
Kaine received his B.A. in economics from the University of Missouri in 1979, completing his degree in three years and graduating summa cum laude.[2][3] He was a Coro Foundation fellow in Kansas City in 1978,[8] then attended Harvard Law School, taking a break during law school to work with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Honduras.[9] Kaine worked in Honduras for nine months from 1980 to 1981, helping Jesuit missionaries who ran a Catholic school in El Progreso.[10][6] While running a vocational center that taught carpentry and welding, he also helped increase the school's enrollment by recruiting local villagers.[3] Kaine is fluent in Spanish as a result of his year in Honduras.[10]
According to the July 23, 2016 Time article:
According to Kaine, that year was a watershed time in his life. “I think of El Progreso everyday,” Kaine said. “The people, aside from my family, are the most important in shaping who I am today.”
He also claims his experiences with the Jesuits have inspired his public service: “I do what I do for spiritual reasons. I’m always thinking about the momentary reality, but also how it connects with bigger matters of what’s important in life.”

Kaine grew up in a very devout family. He told C-SPAN earlier this year that “when we got back from a vacation on a Sunday night at 7:30 PM, they would know the one church in Kansas City that had an 8 PM Mass that we can make.”
Kaine still attends Mass with his wife today at a predominantly African American parish in Richmond, where he once was a choir member before his demanding political schedule got in the way.
Kaine has had run-ins with the Church on social issues, most notably on abortion and the death penalty. Kaine supports abortion rights, which is against Catholic teaching.

Asked about this issue earlier this summer, Kaine responded: “I have a traditional Catholic personal position, but I am very strongly supportive that women should make these decisions and government shouldn’t intrude.”

That nuanced view will be difficult to swallow for many abortion rights activists within the Democratic Party and with many of his fellow Catholics who support the right to life from conception.
Kaine does, however, support many of the economic and social justice issues at the heart of the Church’s teaching, most notably support for comprehensive immigration reform.
During Pope Francis’s trip last fall, Kaine said he was moved to tears by the pontiff’s address to Congress.

The Virginia Senator recently told me that he considered Pope Francis to be his hero.
After Francis’s address last September, Kaine said that Francis should force us to “ask what our motives are as a nation.”

On the abortion issue, Kaine describes himself as anti abortion, yet also anti government intervention in the process.

As Virginia governor he supported some interventions, such as mandating parental notification and restrictions on partial birth abortion.

More recently as a U.S. Senator, he has earned a 100% record from Planned Parenthood.

Leading pro-life groups know Kaine is pro-abortion.
    http://www.lifenews.com/2016/07/25/planned-parenthood-loves-pro-abortion-tim-kaine-hes-a-solid-vote-and-realy-an-ally/

“Like Hillary Clinton, Sen. Tim Kaine supports the current policy of abortion on demand,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Like Hillary Clinton, Sen. Kaine is so extreme on abortion he opposes even the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation to protect unborn children from abortion after 20 weeks, when they are capable of feeling excruciating pain during dismemberment or other late abortion methods.”

As a U.S. senator, Kaine has voted against the pro-life position every chance he got. Sen. Kaine voted to allow government funding of abortion providers, and he voted against legislation to require an abortionist to notify at least one parent before performing an abortion on a minor girl from another state.

Kaine took his most extreme pro-abortion action yet with his recent co-sponsorship of the so-called “Women’s Health Protection Act” (S.217), known to pro-lifers as the “Abortion Without Limits Until Birth Act.” This bill would nullify nearly all existing state and federal limitations on regulation of abortion, and prohibit states from enacting meaningful pro-life laws in the future. This revamped version of the long-stalled “Freedom of Choice Act” is a priority of the pro-abortion forces in Washington, D.C.
A genera lack of concern over the issue of pain regarding methods of abortion would fly in the face of general concerns of such for say how animals are slaughtered for food, yet is alas nonetheless near typical among the lockstep political ideological scene.

Though taking a non governmental interventionist stance on abortion, Kaine has taken the diametrically opposite stance regarding actual matters of 'what one does with their own body' with regards to Rome's Pharmacratic inquisition.

He has stated that he would not vote to end the prohibition on Cannabis, embodied in U.S. federal legislation in the 1970 Controlled Substances Act as a "Schedule 1' substance.
    https://thecosbybolt.com/2016/04/15/tim-kaine-forum/

On Friday, March 18, Current Democratic Senator Tim Kaine visited Cosby for a forum hosted by the politics club. Students from government classes had the opportunity to submit questions, and 14 were chosen to be asked at the forum. Questions ranged from topics such as the government treatment of ISIS, to the decriminalization of marijuana. To the latter, Kaine said that while he, “support[s] drastic changes in sentencing laws…I wouldn’t vote for a law at the federal or state level that would decriminalize marijuana.” He thinks the nation should see how things go in Colorado and other states who have legalized marijuana before making a decision

Has asked if Marijuana legalization has encouraged contraband entrepreneurs to switch to heroin.

To his credit he has recently given lip service to the idea of U.S. federalism where the various States may enact differing statutory policies regarding Marijuanna.

Like perhaps every other U.S. politiian Kaine has limited any discussion of drug prohibition relaxation to Marijuanna.

Given the concern over the physical health of his senior running mate Hilllary Clinton, such as with her faltering as she was escorted to a secret service vehicle in Manhattan, N.Y. on September 11, 2006 following an early departure from a 911 memorial gathering, there's concern over Kaine being placed in such a position as Clinton's Vice President thus having him litterally a heartbeat from becoming the U.S. President in the event that she dies or becomes otherwise incapacitated.
