In the presence of Katie Couric, Brian Williams, both New York senators, the state's governor and the city's mayor, the widow and son of Tim Russert, Dennis Sullivan, a cast of thousands and -- in his last turn as its host -- Cardinal Edward Egan, the Al Smith showdown went off with lots of humor and without incident earlier tonight.

Lest any doubt remained of the draw of the evening's joint keynoters -- both presidential candidates, in their final pre-election meeting -- this 63rd Dinner pulled in over $4 million for New York's Catholic Charities, more than double last year's take for the Tony Blair-headlined soiree.

Just a reminder that -- fresh off their tense final debate (fullvideo) -- the presidential contenders will make their last joint appearance of the campaign at tonight's Al Smith Dinner in New York.

Now in its 63rd year, the white-tie barb-fest at the Waldorf-Astoria benefits Catholic Charities of the Big Apple archdiocese. Hosted by Gotham's cardinal-archbishop -- who, in one of his last major appearances before retirement, will be flanked by John McCain and Barack Obama at the center of the traditional multi-tiered dais -- the event takes its name in tribute to the son of the Lower East Side tenements who rose to become the Empire State's governor, and in 1928 the first Catholic nominated for the presidency.

Beyond sold-out, this year's dinner has far exceeded its $2.5 million goal thanks to its joint keynoters:

Political heavyweights will pepper the dais: Sen. Hillary Clinton, Gov. Paterson, Mayor Bloomberg and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

Former Gov. George Pataki, former Mayor Ed Koch and Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau will be there, too.

When [Al] Smith [IV] approached then-McCain adviser John Weaver about the Republican nominee appearing, "He said, 'We'll be there.' I said, 'I haven't given you the date yet.' He said, 'Doesn't matter.'"

McCain spoke at the Al Smith dinner in 2005.

Getting Team Obama to commit was slightly more work: "My line to them was, 'I know you're coming. You know you're coming.'"

McCain and Obama will each deliver 15-minute talks.

Appearing at the Al Smith dinner is a tradition for presidential candidates, with both major nominees typically attending in an election year.

"They say Jack Kennedy won the [1960] election at the Al Smith Dinner," Smith said in his office at St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Centers, which features an array of Gov. Smith's photos and an Obama bobble-head doll.

In 2004, Democrat John Kerry - a Catholic - was not invited, presumably for his pro-choice stance on abortion. As a result, President Bush also did not attend.

Alfred E. Smith, the nation's first Catholic presidential candidate back in 1928, died in 1944. The first dinner in his honor came a year later at the behest of then-Archbishop Francis Spellman.

Since then, it has become one of the premier fund-raisers for the Archdiocese of New York.

Last year, with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair headlining, the dinner raised $1.8 million for charity, Smith's great-grandson said.

From 9pm Eastern (0100GMT), the dinner and speeches will be shown/streamed live on C-Span and Sirius Satellite Radio's The Catholic Channel.

In other campaign news from the church beat... presumably for purposes of, er, emphasis, one US bishop has taken to employing the Democratic nominee's middle name.

LeBar says he has been in contact with Opus Dei over the years, "hoping to help them see where the line is drawn and where they cross over it." Notice in the above bold that Lebar states, "If someone wishes to follow a very strict way of life, and be very closely supervised, and they willingly go into that, that's fine," This statement is in complete contradiction with the whole mission of the "anti-cult" movement. They are saying that people who are involved with what they consider cults aren't able to make this decision by themselves. Thus it is a completely hypocritical stance he is taking excusing groups affiliated with the Catholic Church while attacking all kinds of other groups that, in my opinion, are way less demanding.

Lessons from the 1929 stock market crash

WHAT HAPPENED?

In October 1929 shares on Wall Street fell sharply following a speculative boom during the "Roaring Twenties".

In two days the Dow Jones industrial average fell by 25% (ending on Black Tuesday, 29 October).

The volume of stocks traded set a record that was not broken for 40 years.

When it finally reached its record low in July 1932, the Dow Jones had fallen 89%, and it did not recover to 1929 levels until 1954.

WHAT WAS THE CAUSE?

Debates continue over the causes of the Wall Street crash.

With stocks rising four-fold over the previous decade, it had all the characteristics of a bubble, with stocks in new technologies like radio leading the way up.

Speculation among stocks was intense in 1929

With lax regulation and few rules on insider trading, dealers were also able to "ramp up" shares, and holding companies built up positions in other companies without putting up any equity of their own.

Individuals were also able to buy stocks on "margin" by borrowing the money against their other share holdings.

Finally, political considerations - including Congress passing a highly protectionist tariff bill - also spooked the market.

The central bank, the US Federal Reserve, had also held interest rates unusually low for several years in order to aid the UK Sterling, which had returned to the gold standard.

WHAT WAS THE IMPACT?

The Wall Street crash corresponded to a sharp decline in US economic output, which eventually spread around the world.

The US economy shrank by a third, and unemployment reached 25%, with many more workers on short hours.

In addition, the US banking system had seized up completely, and the first act of the new Roosevelt administration when it came to power was to close all banks for two weeks while Federal inspectors examined their books.

With no unemployment benefits or government help, the sharp fall in workers' income had a big effect on consumption and lead to a negative spiral of more factory closures.

Most observers believe that economic policy-makers made the economic downturn worse by adopting tight money policy and balanced budgets as the crisis worsened.

International trade also shrank as the US went off the gold standard and erected high tariff barriers to prevent foreign imports.

WHAT SOLUTIONS WERE TRIED?

Initially the authorities tried to rebuild confidence in markets by making reassuring speeches, with President Herbert Hoover telling Americans that the US economy was fundamentally sound.

Only a shake-out of workers from industry would ultimately restore prosperity, it was argued.

The crash caused serious privation for millions

Private charity was relied on to help the victims of the slowdown.

Everything changed after Franklin D Roosevelt was elected president in 1932, and the US government intervened to provide unemployment relief, to stabilise markets by restricting production, to encourage unions, and to create a government system of old age pensions and unemployment insurance known as social security.

However, the Roosevelt administration had less success in reviving economic growth and business confidence remained weak.

HOW WAS THE SITUATION RESOLVED?

The Great Depression lingered on despite the variety of New Deal measures that attempted to alleviate the suffering of individuals by providing government jobs, welfare relief or mortgage protection.

It was only the onset of World War II, when the US government finally embraced Keynesian-style deficit spending on a large scale, that the economy recovered.

US economic output doubled during the war, and unemployment vanished as women and blacks were pulled into the workforce to replace the millions drafted into the military.

At its peak, the US government was borrowing half the money needed to finance the war, while half was raised by taxes.

WHAT LESSONS ARE THERE FOR THE CURRENT CRISIS?

There are three main lessons which policy makers are applying to the current crisis.

The first is that financial markets, banks, and the real economy are interlinked, so that unresolved problems in one sector can spread to others.

The second is that active and rapid government intervention to ease pressures on the economy is essential during times of real economic crisis. The slow and probably wrong-headed response of the US government and central banks in the 1930s made the downturn more severe.

Thirdly, there is the danger of a policy vacuum during the inter-regnum. In 1933 the US banking crisis grew much worse during the five months between the election of a new president and his taking office.

That may explain why both candidates endorsed the Bush administration's rescue plan despite some misgivings.

Yet in all of the news reports, there is no mention (as far as I have found) of the man that Pacelli 'idolized'; according to Tupper Saussy:

The fact that the Catholic Church has repeatedly condemned freemasonry (the “illuminate”) etc, seems to have escaped you entirely along with the fact that its greatest enemies, particularly in the late 18th and 19th centuries, were all freemasons. Whatever one thinks of the Jesuits (and the ones I know personally are uniformly spiritual and devout men with a sincere love of their fellow men – in the generic sense), to tie them into freemasonry and these kind of conspiracies simply betrays an ignorance of the history of the Society. Not least because the Jesuits of the late 20th century are the polar opposite in their understanding of the role of the Papacy and the Church to those of the 19th century; for me their obsession with social justice (not in itself wrong) has clouded their judgment in some other areas.

Again, knowing the Order of Malta and its history as well as I do, I find the idea that it is some kind of secret power simply laughable. The men who run it are largely elderly, they include school teachers (the late grand master and another member of the sovereign council Fra Elie de Comminges), university professors (Fra John Macpherson), lawyers (Anthony Sanchez Correa), a Sotheby’s regional representative (fra Matthew Festing, the present Grand Master), and the like; most of them have little or any interest in politics and very little experience of business. They would be horrified to find a freemason in their midst.

In fact, they were the remnants of the Templar network – Rosicrucians, Teutonic Knights, the numerous and various rites of Freemasonry. Like the Templars and the Jesuits, they were religious hierarchies of strict obedience.
